Knowing Your SWOT
WHAT IS SWOT? - Before we start our work on developing Niagara Falls, we must carry out a thorough business type analysis of the Niagara Falls. IGCSE & IB Business students will use this technique a lot more in future studies. We will be carrying out a SWOT analysis on Niagara. Read the definition of SWOT to the right hand side.

Task 1 - Carry out a SWOT analysis (first blue tab) on the Niagara falls area (second blue tab)
task 1 - swot worksheet
SWOT analysis is a structured planning method used to evaluate the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats involved in a project or in a business venture. A SWOT analysis can be carried out for a product, place, industry or person. It involves specifying the objective of the business venture or project and identifying the internal and external factors that are favorable and unfavorable to achieving that objective.

planning booklet - niagara redeveloped
mark sheet - niagara falls  scheme
"Niagara Falls is one of our state's most valuable tourism assets, drawing visitors from around the globe to see the magnificent falls, and a transformed downtown will help the City of Niagara build on this strength to further revitalize the local economy, Governor Cuomo said.

"The selection of one major Western New York developers will bring Niagara one step closer to putting shovels in the ground and transforming the former Rainbow Centre Mall. Through the Buffalo Billion, the State made a commitment to rebuilding Western New York's economy and creating jobs in communities that have seen economic hardship for too many years, and today we are continuing to deliver on that promise."
Who and What you are competing against! - The only other plan on the table (and it may be accepted) is this one from Uniland called 'Wonderfalls'. - Check out what your competition are proposing by clicking here.

Google Map Link for the site is here

Assessment Preparation - Individually, complete all the background tasks on the preparation booklet (blue tab above).

Step 1 - The Big Plan
Here is your
costing sheet for the different schemes that you can mix and match to form your proposal. You will need to do the working out to keep within your $4 million budget.  They are colour coded to show you the two major differences (demolish or refurbish).

Step 2 - Show your manager
Now complete the summary sheet that shows your scheme and Social, Economic and Envionmental considerations.

Step 3  - The accountancy task
Complete this completed Excel spreadsheet with all of your costings submitted.

Step 4  - Your site
A3 map of the site including designs of redeveloped site or existing site with modifications to the interior/exterior
using this plan. Annotate all of your developments from Step 1 & 2 onto this sheet.  Include the following underneath:

2. Sketches of new buildings (by hand or Google Sketchup) showing features and building materials based on your choices from the proposal cards.

3. List of activities for tourists in the area and linked to your development. This should link to the three elements of sustainability (social, economic & environmental)

4. An accompanying written report of at least 500 words to the Niagara Falls Tourist board from your development company recommending why your plan is better than the current  'Wonderfalls' development.

**Note - your presentation piece including your written report should include your logo and slogan throughout (headed paper, architects plan etc) **

The mark scheme can be accessed by clicking on the blue tab above.
