student display - reactive geography
Outline - How does this work?
In short, I have no idea, but am currently testing with my G10 IGCSE Geography class. Rather than simply complete a series of questions and worksheets (i.e. not all the stuff I've produced here), I have asked my students to spend two lessons & homework working on small but varying group work tasks to complete a 'reactive Geography display' showing the causes and continuing effects of Hurricane Matthew on Haiti and Florida.
There are seven teams altogether each of who is working on a different aspect of Hurricane Matthew, including formation; MEDC/LEDC impacts; modeling house destruction on the Saffir-Simpson Scale and more. I have used the ideas of others such as model making, taking Tony Cassidy's 3D Hurricane Model to a new level (& size), Russel Tarr's Fakebook profile being used for reports from Haiti & USA and Simon Jones' inspiration series of hazard presentations to highlight the difference in impact and response in both Haiti and Florida.
The aim is to educate the school community about the unfolding disaster as well as it being a learning experience for the participating IGCSE Geography students and valuable case study material. We are currently towards the end of the 'Natural Environments' unit of work and Tropical Storms was the new topic for this week following on from measuring weather & climate! Talk about current Geography on demand!
Below is the task sheet that I have provided for them together with associated resources that I have sourced so far. I'll add photos and commentary as and when the display comes to fruition (and I'll also be talking about it in my Practical Pedagogies lecture down here in Toulouse at the beginning of next month. See some of you there!)
