Introduction   To   Tropical   Storms

​You will be completing a study of one tropical storm event from a choice of two below and your partner will complete the other. The first option is in the USA and the second is in Myanmar (Burma). This will provide you with sufficient content to be able to make a comparison of the impacts of same hazard for your examination case study.

Creative iGCSE Task - We are going to start off by creating a 'Pop Up Hurricane' cross section in our Geography exercise books.

Then, study the diagram below carefully looking at the spatial distribution of tropical storms around the world. Around your pop out hurricane model, annotate the key ingredients for hurricane formation, different names for the storms, the scale and their movement in the northern and southern hemispheres.

This case study can be taught one of two ways. 

At IST, we get into pairs and each produce a case study one of the two tropical storms here. 

To do this, use the resources on this page (but don't complete the worksheets) and in the OCR B textbook pages 136-137 to build your case study using the same format as earthquakes, volcanoes and flash floods.  No structure is provided for you and you should know how to complete a case study by this stage of Year 11. 

Alternatively, the more traditional approach is below. Complete the activities as set out (Non-IST)

Starter: Turn to page 134-135 of the OCR B textbook and read the information carefully. Then complete all of the tasks on this worksheet. An alternative worksheet is here

Task 1 - Study this presentation 'Hard Times for the 'Big Easy' PowerPoint - Hurricane Katrina' (Some disturbing images).

As you have seen, this is a very unusal event in that the subsequent death rate and response did not represent the normal levels expected in the USA. 

Task 2 - As background to the storm, complete this worksheet 1 - Hurricane Katrina Summary Sheet. You will need access to to the OCR B textbook, page 136-137. 


2. Cyclone   Nargis,   Myanmar  -  2008

Objective: To discover the causes, impacts and effects of Cyclone Nargis on the people of Myanmar.  

This case study can be taught one of two ways. 

At IST, we get into pairs and each produce a case study one of the two tropical storms here. 

To do this, use the resources on this page (but don't complete the worksheets) and in the OCR B textbook pages 138-139 to build your case study using the same format as earthquakes, volcanoes and flash floods.  No structure is provided for you and you should know how to complete a case study by this stage of Year 11.

Starter: Watch the video (Quick look at Myanmar) underneath once and take as many notes as possible about the country of Burma/Myanmar.

Task 1 - Download this presentation (There are some disturbing images) Complete all activities on the presentation. You will need the following documents to do this

Task 2 - Download this document - The Hidden Horrors of Cyclone Nargis. You will need to annotate this document

Each student should have a copy of a map of Myanmar to stick into their exercise books. This will form part of your locational work.

Comparing Two Tropical Storms

Objective: To carry out a comparison of both cyclone events and to see the differences in responses between the two affected countries. 

You will need to choose a piece of work to compare your case study to. This will be another person in your Geography group who has completed the other case study.

When you are in possession of this, and with pages 136-139 of the OCR B textbook to hand, complete the worksheet in the blue tab above. You will be able to complete all tasks, apart from the bottom one. To do this, you need to complete task 1 below. 

Task 1
: Watch the two YouTube videos embedded below.

  • The first video was filmed five years after Hurricane Katrina struck the south coast of the USA and focuses on the rebuilding effort in New Orleans. Note down the long term response efforts that have happened/continue to happen in the bottom row of your worksheet. 

  • The second video shows the situation in 2009, one year after the cyclone tore through southern Myanmar. Note down the long term responses that have happened/continue to happen in the bottom row of your worksheet.

Task 2: Attempt the iGCSE Geography question underneath:


Examine the effects and responses to Cyclone Nargis and Hurricane Katrina? What are the similarities and differences?  (10)

How can people be saved from the impacts of Tropical Storms?

Objective: To find out how people in Cuba plan and prepare for Hurricane Season.

Task 1: Watch both videos underneath and make notes on the 'Beating the Hurricane' documentary.


Task 2: Turn to page 142 & 143 of the OCR B Textbook and study the information carefully. Your task is as follows. You work for an Engineering Firm called 'Hurricanes R Us', a Toulouse based strategy company. Both the Mayor of New Orleans and the President of Myanmar (unusually) have called on you to help for future planning. You must create an A4 plan of action for both countries bearing in mind their levels of economic development. Include as much information as possible from the OCR book and your own research. Your information should include:

1. Planning and education
2. Individual Responsibility
3. Warning and Forecasting
4. Aid.

Include images, maps and designs to get your message across. You may be summoned to present your ideas.
