teacher ideas - 10 ways to start off year 7 geography

geography - a connected subject

What do you think Geography is all about?

Watch the Animaniacs YouTube video beneath. Pretty amazing eh?

  • Is it important to be able to do this? Could you do it?
  • Write 30 words exactly that describe what Geography means to you.
  • Find something in the classroom, or in your bag or something that you are wearing and be prepared to explain how you think it is Geography related. Think back to the last two lessons of work too.

To give you some inspiration, the Planet Earth video will be playing in the background.

Lots of Geography

Objective: To find out about the three main areas of geography and how they are connected.

Task 1 - Turn to page 4&5 of geog.1 and complete activities 1-6 fully in your geography folders.

Discuss your answers with your classmates and the teacher. Which type of Geography do you think you will like best and why?

Nosy Geographers! Who, What, Where, When, Why?

Objective: To learn how to be a nosy Geographer.

Task 1 - Look at this picture and complete the captions as part of the Nosy Geographers enquiry using the 5 W's above.

Complete your responses on the worksheet below:(Some good discussion points can evolve from this in particular, possible countries, shape of the kayak, mistaking the kayak for a seal)

Task 2 - Choose one of the six photos below. Using the same format as the previous worksheet, complete your nosy Geographer 5W's task.  You can use the worksheet underneath to help you.

Homework Task - Presentation Relay

You are going to be searching for something Geography at home or on your travels. I would like you to apply the 5W's Nosy Geography approach to that object and create a one slide presentation on PowerPoint with a photo of the object and the 5w's carefully explained.

Geography In The News

Picture
Objective: To discover good sources of geographical information and to put our nosey geographers know-how to good use.

Here are two really super websites!
http://www.ouramazingplanet.com/

http://www.earthweek.com/

Task 1 - Click on both of the links and spend 5 minutes looking through the website and following recent Geography stories. Did anything catch your eye???

Task 2 - You are going to put together a one page graphic to show a recent Geography event in the news. You must try to cover the following points:

a) Where is this place?
b) What is this place like?
c) What has happened in this place?
d) Has it changed?
e) Who has been affected by this event?
f) How do the people feel about it?
g) How do I feel about it?

You might not be able to answer every question depending on the news story chosen, but don't worry about that.

Don't forget to include maps, pictures (be careful with copyright), date and a title on graphic. You can use Word, PowerPoint or Publisher.

Your work will be marked as follows:

Presentation / 10
Content / 10

Total 20 Marks

Task 3 - Produce a 30 second 'rant' to go with the graphic. Your speech should inform the class why you chose this story and what it has to do with Geography. You must tell all of us what type of Geography it is .... Physical, Human, Environmental or even a mixture of the two or three!

You will give a timed 'rant' at the front of the class with your graphic displayed on the whiteboard behind you. You must not go over the 30 seconds time limit otherwise you will be cut off .......... not good!
