Paper 1 HL/SL - 07/01/2013

Your exam will be split into four sections. Total time 1 hour 30 minutes

Pt.1 - Populations in Transition
Pt.2 - Disparities in Wealth and Development
Pt.3 - 15 Mark Essay Question

Note in the real exam in May 2013 you would have the two units that we have not completed yet:

Pt.4. Patterns in Environmental Quality & Sustainability
Pt.5 Patterns in Resource Consumption ...... Click here for access to a sample IB Paper 1 Examination

How are the questions structured?
From 2011, Paper 1 has text boxes in which to write your answers and the format has changed.

Part 1 - 2 will each have two questions each (4 in total) and should take no more than 1 hour to complete, that's 15 minutes each.

Each question is split into an a,b,c format.

Question a is normally based on stimulus material and will ask you to interpret a graph or chart. Be very careful to read the command words carefully and study graphs to avoid silly mistakes.  (2+2 marks)

Question b will normally then ask you to advance the theme explored in question 1. This will require case study knowledge. (2+2 marks)

Question c generally links in with another part of the unit and can be on anything but will be case study based. (2+2 marks)

Part 5 is an essay based question and you will have a choice of three to complete.  This is where your essay writing skills (under pressure) will be tested. You will be expected to write in the region of one and a half pages of A4 in this section.  Quality & Quantity!
Sample Paper 1&2 exams, resource booklets and mark schemes to the left. The questions, mark schemes are present but remember that the structure changed on Paper 1 from 2011 onwards.

Paper 2 - HL/SL Geography 08/01/2013

You will receive a paper that has all the optional themes available to students studying IB Geography. We have not studied all of these. You need to choose the right ones to answer!

SL - Two questions - 1 hour 20 minutes
HL - Three questions - 2 hours

SL & HL - Answer Optional Theme A - Freshwater - Issues and Conflicts (40 minutes)

HL Only - Answer Optional Theme D - Hazards & Disasters - Risk Assessment & Response (40 minutes)

SL/HL - Answer Optional Theme E - Leisure, Sport & Tourism (40 minutes)

There is a choice of one of two questions for Theme A,D & E. Do not attempt to answer both. You will have a separate resource booklet and there will be maps, photos and newspaper articles to interpret. Each question is split into the a,b,c format and follows the following mark structure.

a - based on data response -  2+2 or 4 marks (8 mins)
b - building on question a and includes case study requirement - 6 marks (12 mins)
c - Essay question based on any part of the unit - 10 marks (20 mins)

HL Paper 3 - Global Interactions - 15/01/2013

How will paper 3 work?

This is the third and last of your mock papers - you should try to save the best for last here as this is a tricky exam and the mark scheme is demanding  You have to be totally on-form and there is no room for misunderstanding or flowery language. They are expecting near degree level knowledge and understanding of some higher level topics. Remember how to write essays and ensure that you have the essay structure framework embedded into your brain!

The format is quite simple really.  You will have a choice of one of three sets of questions. You cannot mix and match!

Question 1 - 10 marks (22 minutes max)
Question 2 - 15 marks (38 minutes max)

Total time - 1 hour.

Done!
