Life Expectancy, Education and Income

Objective: To identify and explain the changing patterns and trends of regional and global disparities of life expectancy, education and income.

Deadline day - MDG's
Objective: To examine the progress made in meeting the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in poverty reduction, education and health.
Starter: Watch the two YouTube videos. Check out this infographic too. With a few months left until the deadline, do you think that we are going to be able to meet our obligations? For this particular unit of work, your class will need to focus in on goals 1, 2, 4, 5 and 6 only. You will be working in five groups to create a presentation that outlines the progress made so far and the likelihood of meeting your allocated goal. You will be assigned a group for goal 1, 2, 4, 5 & 6. Study the MDG Progress Report below. You might want to download your own copy here and save to your Core - Patterns & Change folder. Task 1 - The first task requires the use of a site called Wordle. It is a great tool for extracting key words from large bodies of text. It works by simply copying and pasting a block of text into it, and the rest is taken care of. Click here to be taken directly to the site. i. Open the MDG progress report and scroll through to your goal and copy and paste the text into a Wordle. You should get something that looks a bit like this. Copy the Wordle/screenshot it onto your worksheet (above on the blue tab) and write up your commentary on the main words and themes covered. Task 2 - Now you are ready to start your presentation. You can use your worksheet above to record an overview of information. The PowerPoint outline is here. Use case study countries throughout and comment on the ability of regions to meet these goals (see link on Sub Saharan Africa above)
End with a conclusion about whether the goals will be fully or partially met by 2015. Were there any factors that were not considered in 2000 when the goals were set? Think carefully about the ongoing global recession.

Objective: Students are to complete their own Sustainable Development Goals School Campaign for 2015 - 2030
Using the tab below, create your own attractive display to promote the new goals around our school environment. You will be given a blank display as well as all the resources you need to create your display.
You will need to include your own celebrity poster (you!) as well as a short piece of work on what has happened since 2000 and what needs to happen by 2030.

* Come to an agreement on the text font and size to standardize all posters.
* What quotes can you add to your piece of the display
* You'll need to laminate the posters so that they last for the rest of the year.
