Objective: To be able to explain the growth in the leisure and tourism industries and to study the positive and negative impacts of tourism in Bali.
In the 1970's, Bali became very popular with a few adventurous surfers who wanted something a bit different. Bali was known for its spiritualism and its ranking in the top 10 surf breaker (waves for surfing) locations in the world. Nowadays, Bali is a tourism mecca attracting hundreds of thousands of tourists from all over the world, in particular from North America, Europe and Australia. Tourism contributes 4.1 percent to Indonesia’s GDP and employs 6.9 percent of the workforce. Tourism provides much needed jobs and growth, and is therefore strongly encouraged by the Balinese and national government. This tourism has also brought some negative effects to the island of Bali and you will be conducting some further research to complete your own independent study using the work booklet below.
