IB Learner Profile Link - Reflective & Thinkers

Resource
PowerPoint - Lesson 1&2 with tasks and embedded videos

Starter: How leisure & tourism are you? Complete your personalised A3 worksheet by clicking on the blue tab below.

i.  Fill in each of the three sections to show your experiences in sport, tourism and leisure time.
ii. Now try to make links between each of the three sections i.e. holiday in Spain (tourism) and watched a football match (sport).

starter task - how leisure & tourism are you?
Task 1 - Watch each of the two videos underneath. Each one contains elements of sports, leisure & tourism. But how do define each?

Leisure: Define: Free time when you are not in work, education or carrying out essential domestic activities and compulory activities e.g sleeping and eating.

i. However, do some people enjoy carrying out domestic activities. What about DIY?

ii. Is free time really free? Or do social and economic forces package it as "leisure time" and offer you a host of (paid for) activities.

iii. If you have a free weekend, what sort of things might you do?
iv. How is this presented to you?
v. Why do you feel it is leisure?

vi. Why do many MEDC governments like to promote Leisure Time amongst their populations? Surely, a person not at work is not productive?

Define: Recreation  - this is referred to as the activities that are done when not working and are done for amusement, fun or pleasure.

Define: Tourism - Travel away from home for at least one night for the purpose of leisure. Note that this definition excludes day trippers. There are many possible subdivisions of tourism. Subgroups include:

⋅ ecotourism — tourism focusing on the natural environment and local communities

⋅ heritage tourism — tourism based on a historic legacy (landscape feature, historic building or event) as its
major attraction

⋅ sustainable tourism — tourism that conserves primary tourist resources and supports the livelihoods and culture of
 local people.

Define: Sport -  A physical activity with a set of rules and customs. The activity may be competitive.

Influence of Accessibility

Technology & Affluence

Football match in Toulouse.
Objective: Discuss the influence of accessibility, changes in technology and affluence upon the growth of these activities (SLT)

Task 1 - Go to Greenfield Geography wiki and read through the information on the page (scroll down to relevant section).

Sort out (& copy and paste) as many relevant statements from the 14 on the wiki into one of three columns on this worksheet

1. Changes in Technology

2. Affluence
3. Accessibility

**Some may not fit into these three categories. Don't worry.

Task 2 - Choose what you believe to be the 9 most important reasons for a growth in the SLT market and enter them into this classtools activity in rank order. Don't forget to use the text box on the right hand side to clarify why you have chosen some of these options.  Print a copy of the diamond and comments out and save a copy too.

Task 3. Put the title 'Research Notes' and copy the objective above - You should both conduct some further research on how accessibility, technology and affluence have had upon a growth in these markets and try to illustrate your case study with recent examples from each of the three areas (SLT). Use the pocket sized Sport, Leisure & Tourism book by Jane Dove to help you and check out the graphic at the bottom of this page too!
